FORMALISTIC / LITERARY APPROACH Also called “PURE” or “LITERARY” approach The selection is read and viewed intrinsically, or for itself; independent of author, age, or any other extrinsic factor. This approach is close to the “art for art’s sake” dictum.

Two basic approaches to teaching literature at any level are the "structural" (traditional literary analysis) and the "reader response" approaches. While they may be viewed as opposites, they are more productively regarded as complementary.   This approach examines a text as a self-contained object; it does not, therefore, concern itself with biographical information about the author, historical events outside of the story, or literary allusions, mythological patterns, or psychoanalytical traits of the characters (except those aspects described specifically in the text.).
