The long opening essay interacts with critiques of this new perspective on Paul. Dunn seeks to carry forward the debate on Jewish soteriology, on the relation of justification by faith to judgment according to works, on Christian fulfillment of the law, and on the crucial role of Christ, his death and resurrection. “The New Perspective on Paul” is the title of that lecture, the moniker given to the movement it represents, and now the title of a volume that collects twenty of Dunn’s earlier essays on the subject/5(3).

N.T. Wright as Theological Polemicist. Sanders ' pioneering work Paul and Palestinian Judaism. What I miss entirely in the Old Perspective, but find so powerfully in some modern Pauline scholarship, is Paul’s sense of an underlying narrative, the story of God and Israel, God and Abraham, God and the covenant people, and the way in which that story came to its climax, as he says, ‘when the time had fully come’ with the coming of Jesus the Messiah.

Aug 27,  · In his book on the New Perspective on Paul, Stephen Westerholm provides a seven-point summary of what he calls the “Lutheran” Paul. He arrives at these points after examining the Pauline Theology of Augustine, Luther, Calvin and Wesley.

I am summarizing his points here and offer some commentary. James D.G. Dunn is one of the foremost proponents of the so-called school of the New Perspective on Paul (NPP).

The NPP focuses upon Paul’s writing about the Law, with the concepts of “covenantal nomism” and “boundary markers” heavily promoted/5.
